Important Season Update

Apr. 23, 2020

Hi Everyone

Here is an update from Sherwood Park Minor Softball, this is on behalf of our President Peter Gogich and the SPMSA Executive.  The following decisions are based on Alberta Health, EYSA league, and the information we have been receiving from Softball Alberta and Softball Canada.

We continue to try and make decisions based on information and community restrictions.  Its unfortunate but we are cancelling the season for U12 and U14 B and C players. This decision is based on Edmonton Youth Softball League cancelling their league.  Together with the EYSA decision and the closure of sports fields, it is clear we will be unable to have any kind of softball season in June for these age groups.

Our teams that are already formed (Rep Teams and U16B and C) will carry on for now (see below).  Should that prove to not be viable, we will proceed with refunds for those teams, at that point.

Softball Alberta will be making some decisions around Provincials in the next little while.

The situation is continuing to evolve and change and we are trying to be thoughtful with our decisions.

There are 3 stages for refunds for SPMSA:

Stage 1:

Development Camp and Beginner Pitching Clinic - Cancelled and Registration Refunded - Complete

U6,U8,U10 Season Cancelled and Registrants Refunded  - Complete

Stage 2:

U12 ,U14 B and C registrants - Season Cancelled and Registrants to be refunded-please allow our Registrar 2-3 weeks to complete this, it is a big job!

Stage 3:

U12, U14, U16 U19 Rep teams, and U19B, U16 B and C Teams

As stated above, these teams are complete and made, we are waiting on more information from Softball Alberta before moving forward. We understand that EYSA cancelled league play for the U16 B and C teams. However, we will wait for SA announcement as these teams still may have an option to go to Provincials and/or participate in tournaments.  This will also give our registrar more time to complete Stage 2 refunds.  Thanks for your patience in this regard.

If something changes rapidly with the course of this virus and there are significant changes to recommendations and restrictions, we are considering some of the following:

1) Forming Provincial teams for U12/U14 from interested players and coaches, should there be Provincials

2) Running mini camps in the summer/fall

3) Having a mini league and/or exhibition games in the summer/fall

Please watch our social media and website for these opportunities.

In the meantime, we wish all of our players and families good health and please know we support you during this difficult time.

We are so very pleased that you registered for softball this summer and we sincerely hope that you consider softball again next season, should we not be able to get on a diamond this year.

Remember playing catch and sand lot ball with your family is a great way to build your players skills and spend some time outside safely with your loved ones!

Stay home and stay safe,

SPMSA
